Rich in tradition, Barnegat's early settlement can be attributed to their greatest regional asset - Barnegat Bay. Access to the Atlantic Ocean through Barnegat Bay helped Barnegat become one of the leading regional seaports. Barnegat's legendary sea captains and baymen, as well as the Perrine Sneakbox, became world-famous. Commerce, glass making and shipbuilding were industries responsible for the evolution of Barnegat Village. Many marine-oriented and fishing activities still abound and are characteristic of the township's early growth.

Today, Heritage Village in historic Barnegat showcases 18th century homes and artifacts from Barnegat's seafaring heritage. The Village is preserved by the Barnegat Historical Society and its enclave includes the Lippincott-Faulkinburg House, the barber shop, the Edwards house, the butcher shop and a corn crib. The Historic District in Barnegat center includes the Town Square, lovely gardens at the historic Cox House and "old town" Barnegat. Barnegat also participates in the Ocean County Historical Trail and embodies a division of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, plus parts of the Pasadena and Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Areas.

Perhaps the most popular of all Barnegat destinations is the Municipal Dock. A stroll on the dock, a view of the sunset from the Barnegat Pavilion or a few hours fishing, crabbing and boating, is an excellent way to relax. There are several city parks and numerous recreation programs available but a day under the boardwalk, down by the bay, just may be the perfect adventure.
